Following
is an excerpt from a recent bulletin disseminated by the International Diatomite Producers
Association (IDPA)
from Long Beach, CA, entitled “IARC RECLASSIFICATION OF CRYSTALLINE SILICA”:
"Occupational
exposure to crystalline silica dust has been recognized for many years as the cause of
silicosis. "
In
recent years the issue of whether or not a relationship exists between crystalline silica
exposure and the risk of lung cancer has been controversial. We would like to update you
on recent developments with regard to this issue. Recently,
a Working Group of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) met in Lyon,
France to re-evaluate the available scientific data concerning the relationship between
exposure to crystalline silica and the risk of lung cancer. IARC is an agency of the World
Health Organization, which is part of the United Nations.
Upon completion of their evaluation, the Working Group decided............to
reclassify crystalline silica from the current group 2A classification (probable human
carcinogen) to a group 1 classification (human carcinogen
